Certification

What does ADAPT certification mean exactly for a university?

A university that has ADAPT certification can list this on it’s website. This helps prospective students and their families to decide for a university.

Universities can list their certifaction using the logo and their level (bronze, silver, gold).

Bronze level

At Bronze level, the following is implemented at university/campus:

  • Have a “staff coordinator for students with diabetes”
  • Dedicated web page with information for students with T1D
  • Dedicated web page with information for staff about T1D
  • Run at least 7 social events throughout year
  • Mass email all students to identify students with T1D
  • Provide free medication fridge for students with T1D in student accommodation
  • Reasonable adjustment plan for identified students with T1D (details here)
  • Report annually to ADAPT team

Tip

Implementing the ADAPT Bronze standard is not difficult if your university is already proactive in the support of students with disabilities. For example, you might already have medication fridges and a mass mailout to identify students with needs. In that case, the focus is on adding the staff coordinator and events. For any questions, do not hesitate to contact us via adapt@essex.ac.uk

Silver level

At Silver level, the following is implemented at university/campus (in addition to Bronze level):

  • Offering on campus diabetes education by trained professionals
  • Annual interview with students with T1D to identify barriers and successes in managing T1D during study
  • Collaboration between healthcare and university teams

Tip

One of the main points of focus when implementing the ADAPT Silver standard is involving diabetes care specialists who can provide professional diabetes education. For this, the university needs to establish a good working relationship with a local primary or specialist diabetes care team. For any questions, do not hesitate to contact us via adapt@essex.ac.uk

Gold level

At Gold level, the following is implemented at university/campus (in addition to Silver level):

  • Provide a monthly diabetes clinic on campus
  • Provide on-campus structured education
  • Provide carbohydrate information in university food outlets

How to apply?

  • The university needs to fill in the certification form.
